A Long Way Home

This is a chilled acoustic track, my first here, that I enjoyed making and I hope you enjoy listening to! It started off with a fantasy influence and then just went off on a tangent :)

I've only got a PC for recording/mixing, and im using a Yamaha FG730S folk acoustic and a Shure SM-57 mic fed through a simple ART valve preamp...I tried to get a nice crisp, wide sound with double-tracked rhythm acoustics and a varied lead - a bit of classical, a bit of spanish influence, even a bit of rock/blues. Unfortunately I don't have a very good recording sound card so its not as rich sounding as I would like, but I spent alot of time on the guitar sound with mic placement, EQ, compression and reverb. There's also a few samples in there, and I mastered it too.

This is my first track on Bandamp, so please let me know what you think, constructive criticism is important to me. Go easy, the entire song was completed from concept > recording > mixing > mastering in a single day :)

A Space In Time

Another one-day, software-distortion effort with crappy fruityloops drums, I was going to wait until I get my studio shiat together before I uploaded anything else here but I had fun making this so I thought I'd upload it for the next battle.

It's essentially just over three minutes of me improvising rock soloing over a backing track that I made. The intro (aside from the basis of the finger-tapping) is the only part of the lead that was planned before I started recording. There is four guitars in total, plus the bass (that was also played on my electric guitar). I did the lead in one take again so there will be the odd mistake.

I hope you like it, its mostly just experimentation with a few different melodies/harmonies. Nothing too flash on the guitar, aside from some faster soloing bits, some finger tapping later on, and my favourite bit is at 3m 03 where I did some kind of artifical harmonic and whammied it :)

Oh, and I know the drums are shite. And the guitar slipped out of tune a little for the harmonics during the finger-tapping bit so they sound a little ugly - but I cant be bothered to rerecord because I will be redoing it when I get my equipment sorted anyways. I also need a new guitar!

Please give me any feedback you can!

Peace :)

Acoustic Tone

This is something that I literally recorded in half an hour, so don't expect anything stunning musically it's just an improv.

However, have you ever quested for that sparkly acoustic guitar tone on your recordings? Some of you will know all this stuff already, but for those who are new to recording acoustic guitar I thought I would upload this quick experiment I did and post an explanation as to how it was recorded.

Me ->
Yamaha FG730S dreadnought acoustic (solid top)->
Elixir Nanoweb *Phosphor Bronze* acoustic strings->
Condensor Mic about 1m away->
ART Studio V3 Tube Mic Preamp->
BBE MaxCom outboard Compressor with Sonic Maximiser->
PC

The main chords were recorded twice and panned about 70pc either side. A recurring lead part was recorded, doubled, and panned about 90 pc to either side. The lead was recorded and hit dead centre, and had a bit more of Sonic Maximiser for bite through.

Production was relatively simple, mainly EQ work to differentiate the different parts, although I did add a little more light compression to fatten and tighten.

The track was then mastered.

Now, I know that this isn't 'perfect' acoustic tone. It is just a half-hour recording session with some new gear that ended up being a sum of its parts. I thought it would be nice to post some info for those who are curious as to what gear can help in the recording process for acoustic guitar.

Fundamentals:
A decent sounding acoustic. Trust me, sit in the shop and play them all. You can find a gem at $600 that beats alot of $1000 guitars.
Get decent strings. The elixir phosphor bronze sound miles ahead of anything ive ever bought.
If you are serious about recording acoustic guitar, a respectable mic pre and condensor mic will cost you a minimum of $200 each, but are well worth the investment. A simple dynamic mic can also record nicely such as the Shure SM-57, but you must position the mic carefully or it sounds nasteh.
Learn to use compression. Plugins are great; outboard gear means you cant adapt after recording but saves CPU time and can sound better.
Pay careful attention to EQ.

Anyway, good luck with your recordings and if you have any comments or criticisms of this short clip please feel free to say. Yes, I'm aware it is very 'bright', but that was the tone I was after for this particular style.

Peace.

Acting Different

It's been some time since I posted anything on Bandamp, so thought this would be fun.

Basically this track is kinda a work-in-progress by me and my mate James (we jam quite a bit and are starting a band). 'Acting Different' is also a working title.

Thought some of you could give it a listen and some constructive feedback?

Was particularly pleased with the guitar tone that I got. I have an Ibanez RG2570EX running into a Boss GT-8 and then a Laney TF320 2x12" 120w amp. Recorded using a Shure SM-57 and valve preamp. To get that percussive sound for the distorted riffage, both guitars were run through a shared compressor with quick release time.
Drums are simple and written in fruity loops.
Vocals are also manually double-tracked with some *very* light autotune to minimise a chorus effect between the two takes.

Music/Guitars/Bass/Drums/Mixing/Mastering - Me
Vocals / Lyrics - James

Hope you like it...

Backing track for fun

Hi all

This is a guitar riff I came up with that I liked so decided to turn into a track. It is currently instrumental and highly unfinished although I am sure me and James will turn it into a song at some point.

Please let me know what you think. I am aware the piano and MIDI drums are very sparse but I've ordered an 88 key M-Audio keyboard/MIDI controller for that kind of thing.

Oh, and if any of the awesome vocalists round here want to try laying some vocals down on top of it for fun, that would be really cool.

Peace.

Battle Music concept

Hi all

This is a very early concept version for a track I may develop as 'battle music' for a FF-style 2D RPG I am contributing to.

Please make any suggestive comments you like about the production, the composition, the arrangement - and please take the piece in the context that it is written for

And as above - this is not a finished track by any means. It is a very short concept I did in like an hour for me to consider taking further.

thanks all

Hi all

Here is an early mastered version of our new track, 'Breaking Even', just needs vocals!

Please let me know what you think, especially the bridge :)

I've gone back to my trusty SM-57 after criticisms of the guitar tone I got from using a condensor for my distorted guitar.

Look forward to your comments

Thanks

Calling Time FINAL

Hi all!

After taking into account your opinions, me and James have finalised our track. We are happy with the feel and sound on this version. Following constructive criticism from bandamp members we have:

- increased the presence of the main vocals in the mix
- redone the bridge
- given the distorted guitars a little more bottom end 'grunt' without overpowering them

Please give feedback

Thanks

Dave & James

> PS here are James lyrics again:

Another drunk escapade but you're not having fun
Have i said something stupid?
Would you rather move on to the next bar
Or the next guy thats caught your eye
As you stare out the window, to the taxi rank

You seem distracted, checking the calls on your phone
You're putting walls up now with a distance thats left me alone
Although im not, thats how it feels right now
As I feel you slipping through my fingers
Im calling time, im calling time.

As the night takes its toll
My suspicious unfold
You claim you're under the weather girl as I
Watch you down another vodka and coke
A few lines and a toke
Am I not getting through to you?

You seem distracted, checking the calls on your phone
You're putting walls up now with a distance thats left me alone
Although im not, thats how it feels right now
As I feel you slipping through my fingers...

And I'm left calling time
Lets end our misery
Its all that I can do
what the hell is wrong with you?

You've been like a stranger
You're closing off doors that you might just regret
Im not sure its the way that you wanted things to be
But I'm calling time

And I'm left calling time
Lets end our misery
Its all that I can do
What the hell is wrong with me?

Calling Time almost final

Hi guys

This is the almost final version of a song I uploaded earlier under the title 'acting different' but I've decided it should be Calling Time.

Previous criticisms were that the bass and drums didnt have enough clarity, so both have been boosted in the mix.

Also, people said that James didnt have enough oomph in his delivery. Well he has really gone for it this time!

We've changed the melodies a little, namely the chorus and the addition of a quite emo-esque multi-vocal bridge.

I really like this version but if you have any criticisms please let us know because we are so close!

Also here are James' lyrics because I think they are awesome!!!

Dont Judge Him - early

Hi guys

This is the latest track from me and James. It is called Don't Judge Him, and this is an early mastered version. I know the bass is a bit distorted but it was an artistic choice as part of a really 'in your face sound' so please give any comments you can.

Comments about composition / performance / production are as always valued.

Thanks everyone

Female Vocalist Needed

Hi all

This is a new track, that started off acoustically, but with the chord progression it had I just felt it oozing 80's Rock Ballad!

So, it's now a rock ballad. But I like it that way. I've added some whitesnake-style balls guitars as well as a keychange at the end in place of the ska bit.

So... I really envisage this being sung by a woman with a powerful voice. I really need some conviction here... only problem is I dont know any ladies who can really sing. Is there anyone out there that would like to take a shot at putting vocals on this? I want dramatic, rock, 'men fall in love with you' vocals on this one for a real rock ballad, and I'm hoping someone wants to give it a shot!!!

Peace and love.

Find The Words with vocal

AAHAHAHA my singing is so bad

but seriously, I'm going to be redoing this with James' loverly vocals, but here is a quick version with me singing on it. It's my first vocal on a song and also the first time I've ever written lyrics.

I took suggestions on the bass in the mix etc. I also added a Solo at a suggestion from Avi. It is completely improvised apart from the tapping at the end. For my fellow guitar geeks, it is satriani-style two-handed tapping with a pick, and it is approx 8 notes per beat at 120bpm.

The lyrics are about a guy who cheats on his girlfriend and feels guilty so is trying to find the words to tell her. However as he thinks about it he realises that she drove him away by neglecting him anyway, so he is better off without her.

Lyrics:

I don't want to have this cross to bear
Whenever I see you standing there
She didn't matter to me, and I know I should tell you
But I just can't find the words

Because she was there for me
When you just looked right through me
Tried to catch your eye
But then you looked away
Wanted more from this
But you just loved to take
You just drove me away

I don't want to have this cross to bear
But do I really want you standing there?
I clearly don't matter to you, so why am I waiting
I should just try to find the words

I gave you everything
But you said I was selfish?
I was honest with you
But you said I lied?
So why should I carry on
Just wasting my time...

**SOLO**

So now I dont have this cross to bear
I dont have to see you standing there
She didn't matter to me, but no longer do you
So now I have found the words

Find the Words Ins

Hi all!

This is my latest creation. It is the full instrumental version of the Piano riff I uploaded earlier (this time without my horrible vocals I'm going to leave those to James)!

Anyway I am quite happy with this and I feel it is perhaps the best mix I have done. However I really would like some feedback from you all - if there is anything you don't like about this mix and you can think of anything I could do to make it sound pr0 then please let me know!!!

Drums were done using a MIDI keyboard and Battery. Piano was also played rather than sequenced. Acoustic guitars were recorded using AT4040 condenser and an outboard compressor/exciter. The tambourine on the chorus was also recorded in the same way.

Bass was recorded DI through the Boss GT-8.

The track was then mastered.

I hope you like this piece

Thanks all

Fruityloops random

"Dave why on earth are you doing something in fruityloops? Don't you play guitar?"

Yeah that discussion about the FL plugins got me thinking... it's been about 5 years since I really worked with fruityloops 3 with the DJ's at college, since then I've just been using it for drum loops... but I thought it would be fun to have a play around!

This is only one min long but I thought it would be fun to make a short, simple track and master it fat to see what sound I could get!

Things I did:

Realised that I now suck at FL :-(
Used the pluck and Sytrus generators. They effing rule.
Used delay/reverb and EQ to make interesting drums sounds, and worked on different rhythms together.
Used EQ and panning to differentiate the different bits in the mix.
Used mastering to widen, fatten and enhance the sound, especially the low freqs. If you have a sub and that kick doesnt get you in the stomach I will be offended!

Things I learned:

As above, I suck at Fruityloops.

The Fruityloops bundled compressor *IS* rubbish. An attack time below 5ms causes distortion, and then still doesn't work properly because peaks still manage to get through the compressor, even when configured as a limiter.

The Fruityloops bundled reverb is also very poor, again wasnt happy with the sound so brought in some external plugins.

So if you use fruityloops - get some VSTs in there!

Peace.

Hi guys

Please comment on this *very* early, raw guitar concept track, called 'If our dreams had wings'.

Yes, I know it sounds naff (quick recording and mastered with cheap headphones cos my speakers are broke). I also know that the playing isn't perfect as it is just one take (missed notes, improv, and the harmonics need some work too).

However, what I want most is compositional comments. Do you like the song? Want it to be a track for our new band.

Thanks all :D:D

Is this recording?

This is another of my one-day projects, recorded AGES ago. Im posting this for fun not because I really expect any praise out of it lol. I kinda like the melodic progression/chord sequence but yes I'm aware that the lead work has absolutely no real structure to it - but it was intended that way.

Essentially, the lead was completely made up on the spot in one take and was a complete experiment. Please don't expect anything coherent, but I like to think I got some nice sounds out of my guitar that day! I wasn't trying to play too accurately in terms of scales or timing, and I didnt feel like putting anything especially technical in there - I was just going with the flow and seeing what happened!

I know the backing is repetitive too, but it's 2m long so hopefully won't bore you to death. A simple listen would be appreciated, even if its to say 'wtf were you smoking that day, wheres the structure!?'

In fact, I only realised I'd checked 'record' on the track in Cubase until after it had finished recording. Whence the fact the lead spills over the end a little lol...

And yes, the *software* distortion is evil and too loud. That lead tone is quite creamy but really grates 'cos its completely electronic! I now have a Shure SM-57 mic with preamp to record my Laney 120w amp and Boss GT-8, so please expect much better in future!

My first vocal ever (OMG)

Hi all

This is the first time I have *ever* recorded my voice in a song. It is the short piano piece I uploaded earlier with my vocals on it.

I know I can't sing. I used to love singing but it's been several years since I sang anything. I also didn't use any Autotune on this or any crap like that because I want constructive criticism to improve my voice. And yes I know I start off a little flat.

Please be nice, but any suggestions will help. If you all turn round and say 'stick to the guitar, dave', then I will :(

Lyrics for anyone who cares (about a guy who cheated). It is called 'Find the Words':

I don't want to have this cross to bear
Whenever I see you standing there
She didn't matter to me, and I know I should tell you
But I just can't find the words

New Idea

Hi all

I know some of you hate 'short clip' songs but I'm really looking for feedback on some experimentation right now so please bear with me!

Now this is a simple piano piece I just came up with that I think is quite pretty. Please excuse my very poor piano playing as I am no TK! I just got my new keyboard today so it has been a long time since I played.

I've added some orchestral arrangement as well - cellos, contrabass, and a solo viola and oboe.

Please give any feedback you can. Should I turn this into a full song? What sort of song should I try? What about the sound? Do you like the piano sound I got? What about the orchestra?

Piano was Steinberg's The Grand 2, and the instrumentation was Edirol Orchestral. The parts were just given a little EQ, then the track was mastered.

Thanks guys n gals

No Etiquette (wip)

Hi all

Here is a work-in-progress version of our new song, No Etiquette is the working title.

So far, I just have the acoustic guitar and bass recorded. The bass is sloppy so will be redone, but it was just put down to help us get the tune in our minds.

This will be fully produced with vocals, strings, percussion/drums, and whatever else we decide to put on it in due time.

Please give any feedback you can about the song and the recording. I'm aware that it sounds a little 'bare' at the moment. That's because it is :)

For those of you who are interested, the acoustic was recorded in natural stereo in my new studio. I used an Audio Technica AT4040 condensor closer to the soundhole, and a Shure SM-57 closer to (and above) the neck. The mic positioning was carefully done by ear, and the parts were panned apart.
It has no added reverb and minimal EQ work; with a little compression.

Look forward to hearing your comments. We quite like this one but hoping someone else does too lol.

No Etiquette Instrumental

spoiler: *if you don't like acoustics please keep listening til the distortion kicks in!*

Hi all

Final Instrumental version of 'No Etiquette', which I have made for James to practise his vocals before he puts them down on recording.

I hope you like it - I'm pleased with the production on this one - but if you have ANY comments please leave them for me. I love everything you have to say whether it is bad or not.

Thanks

Out of Sight- gtr concept

Hi guys

Please comment on my very early, raw guitar concept track, working title 'Out of Sight'.

Random Rock

Here's one I made earlier. 3 years earlier in fact. I was 17 and just learning to mix and stuff...It's had a little mastering polish since then, but not alot, and the recording is just as I did it originally. Again - excuse the Fruity Loops 3 drums *shudders*.

Ya I'm aware the lead timing is sloppy in places - partly because of latency, partly because it was made up on the spot in one take, partly because I sucked.

I dunno why I posted this, I just thought it was catchy. Besides I'm short of electric stuff until I get my equipment sorted out so this will have to do! Hope it isn't too bad. Oh, and I couldn't afford mics or anything so the distortion is all software (codeword for 'shite'). Also meant that it was pretty much impossible to do any pinched harmonics :(

Peace.

Safe Haven : Concept

CONTEXT: This track is intended to have a medieval/fantasy vibe to it; my purpose is to create the 'home town' music for within a 2D fantasy game in the style of final fantasy or zelda.

BACKGROUND: An old friend of mine from the states told me a while ago he was gonna give up his current vocation of database programmer to take up game development as a career.

I got an email the other day telling me that he was looking to develop a new simple RPG 'final fantasy style' for PC and possibly Xbox 360; with a small team - and he'd like me to write the music to it.

The game is likely to not surface for some time. However this tune came to me at work and I just had to record it when I got home (we all know what this is like).

Now please go easy on this one because it is a conceptual track (whence the length). The melody I spent alot of time tweaking until I was happy with it. For those that want to know, the components are as below. All instruments are MIDI / Synths of various types. The track was also mastered.

Flute/Piccolo
Solo Viola
Nylon string guitar
Warm Cello Section
Contrabass Section
Snare
Deep floor tom

Please give me any feedback you can; if you guys like this I will finish it and forward it for inclusion in the game.

Thank you all.

Hi all
Just wanted to post something random!
Im sure some of you have tried to do a recording that emulates a famous sound, or famous song that you like.
Well, this is my attempt at the intro to Welcome Home (Sanitarium) by Metallica . Its quite old but I was quite pleased with the feel I got on it!

(Acoustic Version)

Hi everyone

Here is a song written and performed by my mate Kerry Smyth, who I think has a brilliant voice and I really like this tune. I insisted that she let me record it this afternoon (lol) so here is what came out.

Please let us know what you think about the song and the recording, and if you enjoy it please check out her myspace

Simple

WORD OF WARNING - FOR SOME REASON UPLOADING THIS SONG HAS CAUSED IT TO DROP IN PITCH AND PLAY SLOWER. THE ORIGINAL IS *FASTER* AND SLIGHTLY HIGHER-PITCHED.

I kinda like this one because it has two quite rhythmically different clean guitar parts panned either side - apart from that its kinda dire lol.

Another of my one-day projects from some time ago, I was working with very limited resources. That *horrible* lead distortion is software, and the 'bass' was played on an electric guitar and made to sound 'bass-like'. Listen out for it lol...

My favourite bits are the palm-muted rhythm at 8 bars in, and I also like the wide panned distorted rhythm guitars that come in for the 'chorus'.

And yes, you guessed it, the solo is sketchy 'cos it was done in one take and completely improvised! Fastest playing is at about 1m45 - I wanted to save it :) Obscured by that evil distortion tho!

Anyway, I can't wait until I can do some good recordings with my new equipment but for the mean time I just thought I'd shove this old crap on here to show a few of my musical ideas.

The Ultimatum (guitars)

Hi all

This is another track we are working on. It is based around a riff I came up with (the intro) and I think the structure has a nice flow. The verse will of course be alot more interesting with vocals as it is just staccato chords right now but that fits the vocals nicely that james has come up with.

The production is again not going to be great as I'm not mastering on my speakers, and there is no bass or vox, but I'm just after general opinions on the song.

Any suggestions will be taken into consideration for the final produced track which I will stick on here.

Oh and for those who are wondering the guitar sounds a little brutal since I put heavy guage strings on it tuned 1 1/2 steps down (C# upwards)

I quite like the metal tone (although its not produced the best as above) from a downtuned Ibanez -> boss GT-8 + amp sim -> Laney TF320 -> AT4040 condensor

Thanks all.

The Ultimatum Mster Early

***This should be the proper version***

Hi guys

This is an early mastered version of our new track, 'The Ultimatum'.

I've added bass and made some mix changes. Also, James has added some vocals although he is still working on these so they should be considered an early 'work in progress'.

As always comments about mix and performance are appreciated.

Thanks

Hey all

Here is a new version of our track 'The Ultimatum'

New developments:

- Spent AGES on the drum sound using Battery and a Yamaha DTXplorer drum kit. Skillz from our drummer Pete. Check em out!

- Guitars were also recorded with two mics (SM-57 dynamic and AT4040 condenser) to aim for that studio sound and depth.

- James is not 100% happy with his vocals but I like them

- Bass from our very own Joe

- Mix / mastering by me with suggestions from the crew

As always, please let us know what you think :)

The Ultimatum New Ins.

Hi all

Here is a new instrumental master for our track, the ultimatum.

Pls let me know what you think of the guitar tone.

Also this time we got our real drummer playing through a Yamaha DTXplorer electro kit - although this was just recorded through line in we will be recording it in MIDI and played through battery next time for a more authentic drum sound. We also have bass laid down by our bassist... yay!

Any comments are appreciated - this is waiting for James vocals right now.

Hi guys

This is a remixed remastered version of the track 'The Ultimatum'

Still to do: Rerecord the vocals, James is working on those right now

Comments that I have taken on board from you guys:

- Guitars are closer together
- Intro guitar is louder (Basketcase)
- Guitars and bass are mixed with more 'oomph' (Marino)
- Vocals are mixed for more 'cut-through' (BC) although this is in part performance which I'm sure James will redo awesome :)
- More balanced / crisp mix (all)

Thanks guys and please make any additional comments you can!

Time After Time Cover

Hi all

Today me and James decided to do a random song. This was recorded approximately 3 minutes after we actually learned this song, so please dont expect it to be perfect in a production or performance sense we just wanted to capture a sponataneous performance.

It was also recorded in one take entirely, and is not multitracked. I've mastered it a little with a bit of compression and reverb but there are absolutely no effects or eq or compression on the separate elements at mixdown becuase they were recorded together. Just two mics into a mixer and recorded.

So, this is basically a random acoustic version of Cyndi Lauper's 'Time After Time'. Please let us know what you think as we are tempted to perform this live :)

Thanks all

Hi all

Again another song me and James are working on and will have vocals soon. This one is a bit heavier and has some more 'balls' to it. There is a bouncy-ska type influence in places and some distorted grunt too.

Please give any feedback you can about the sound etc. Yes I know its noisy and loud and proud but I wanted it that way lol..

Wrong Decisions Early WIP

Hi all

This is a work in progress for a new song with James. Working title is Wrong Decisions. It is some kind of ska-rhythm intro-come folk acoustic session that we quite like but haven't finished yet!

We currently have a shaker in there, and the idea is that the finished track will feature all live percussion (I have some on order) and possibly a harmonica!

Please give any constructive criticism or positive comments you have to that we can learn from the good/bad of what we have so far. I am aware that the vocals need to be a little quieter and have a little more EQ work.

Thanks everyone
